San Diego International Airport Certifies More than Half of All Restaurants and Retail Shops as SAN Green Concessions

Thirty Airport Food and Beverage and Retail Shops Rated as Environmentally Friendly

Friday, September 22, 2023

More than half of all restaurants and retail shops at San Diego International Airport (SAN) have been certified as SAN Green Concessions in recognition of their significant efforts to conserve energy and water and reduce waste.

The certification, earned by 12 restaurants and 18 retail shops, lasts for one year and requires an annual check-in to ensure continued participation in the program. Certified businesses display a SAN Green Concessions logo at their storefront.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority launched the SAN Green Concessions Certification program in 2017 to evaluate and recognize concessionaires that demonstrate sustainable business practices.

“Environmental stewardship is a hallmark of our operations at SAN,” said Kimberly J. Becker, CEO and President of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “With our proximity to San Diego Bay, downtown San Diego, and residential communities, we are committed to minimizing our impact on the environment and on our neighbors.  We are proud that more than half of the restaurants and retail shops at SAN are certified in our program.”

The SAN Green Concessions Program evaluates airport concessions that annually demonstrate environmentally sustainable practices including  training employees on sustainable business practices, reducing waste generated and diverting waste from landfills, switching to more sustainable products when possible (i.e., plastic straws to paper straws, plastic bags to paper bags, etc.), using eco-friendly cleaning products, reducing energy, and water use, and promoting healthy food options for customers.
