Most people know that when we get heavy rain, much of it runs off into the bay and ocean and adds to pollution problems. But the airport in 2018 installed one of the region’s largest stormwater capture systems. This system captures all the rain that falls on the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza roof and puts it to good use. Instead of allowing the water to run off into the bay, we divert it to our Central Utility Plant, where the water is used in place of potable water in our heating and cooling systems.

The Airport Authority is moving forward with expanding its stormwater capture and reuse system in 2019 with two new stormwater storage tanks; one north of the runway and one to the south.

When all of the work is complete, the airport will have the capability of capturing and reusing up to 39 million gallons of rain annually.
