On December 13, 2021, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board Chair Gil Cabrera and President & CEO Kim Becker celebrated the groundbreaking for the New T1 with members of the community, stakeholders, and employees.
Dignitaries and officials from all levels of government participated, including Congressman Scott Peters, State Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, California State Transportation Agency Secretary David Kim, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and County Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher. Other VIPs included FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta Griffin, Southwest Airlines Managing Director Steve Sisneros, Delta Air Lines General Manager Robert Byers and Turner Construction Sr. Vice President Richard Bach.
The first phase of the New T1 will include 19 gates, a new elevated departures roadway, outdoor check-in pavilions, a new dedicated airport arrivals roadway, and a five-story parking plaza including 5,200 parking spaces. Airside improvements will help streamline aircraft movements and reduce delays.
The second phase will add 11 gates for a total of 30 gates and additional airside improvements. Watch a video about this historic event below.
