June 15, 2021. It might not be a day that lives in infamy but, it is certainly a day that Californians have been waiting for since Governor Gavin Newsom announced that was the target reopening date. California’s reopening means the tiered restrictions that were in place will be removed in many settings and life will closely resemble what it was like pre-COVID-19. However, at San Diego International Airport (SAN) it’s still business as usual and we still have to abide by a few federally mandated rules. If you are traveling anytime in the future, these are the guidelines still in place while on airport property:

Today, Southwest Airlines began nonstop service to Norfolk, Virginia via Norfolk International Airport (ORF) from San Diego International Airport (SAN). The route operates one flight daily, excluding Saturdays.

On June 6, Southwest Airlines will begin daily nonstop service to Kahului, Maui via Kahului Airport (OGG) from San Diego International Airport (SAN). The route will add a second daily flight beginning June 27. Also beginning on June 6, Southwest Airlines will add a second daily flight to Honolulu, Hawaii.

Today, Allegiant Air began seasonal nonstop service from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to Mesa Ariz. via Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA). The airline will begin seasonal nonstop service to Kalispell, Mont. via Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) and Pasco, Wash. via Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) tomorrow, May 28. Flights to all three destinations will be offered until August 16. Beginning June 3, Allegiant Air will offer nonstop service to Bozeman, Mont. via Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) through August 15. Beginning July 1, Allegiant Air will offer nonstop service to Des Moines, Iowa via Des Moines International Airport (DSM) through August 15. 

Here at SAN, we think it’s pretty special that the California Least Tern, an endangered migratory seabird, nest here every year. The California Least Tern is listed under both the federal and California State Endangered Species Act since 1972. 

After being told for more than a year to stay home and only associate with those in your household, it’s no wonder people are eager to travel. With vaccines being administered to thousands of people a day, we are finally on our way to recovery. 

Today, Alaska Airlines began daily nonstop service from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to New York via John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and seasonal nonstop service to Bozeman, Mont. via Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). The airline will begin seasonal nonstop service to Kalispell, Mont. via Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) tomorrow, May 21. 

Southwest Airlines has announced it will expand service to Hawaii from San Diego International Airport (SAN) by adding nonstop service to three Hawaiian cities and expanding their Honolulu service from one flight daily to two flights daily beginning June 6.
