SAN’s SSP America (SSP) restaurants have been identified as Certified Green Restaurants® among U.S.’s airports. SSP America worked with the Green Restaurant Association (GRA), which verified that 172 locations, SAN’s SSP restaurants included, have collectively implemented over 4,330 environmental steps to earn more than 20,390 GreenPointsTM.
SAN was one of the first airports to have 100% SSP locations certified through the Green Restaurant Association. Now eleven other airports join this prestigious Certified Green list. Kenneth Lapeyrolerie, Director of Operations, SSP America at SAN attributes his GRA certification success to participation in the SAN Green Concessions Program, which began in 2017. SAN’s environmentally friendly restaurants are committed to sustainable initiatives such as: training employees on sustainable business practices, reducing waste generated and diverting waste, switching to more sustainable products, when possible (i.e., plastic straws to paper straws, plastic bags to paper bags, etc.), using eco-friendly cleaning products, reducing energy and water use, and promoting healthy food options for customers.
The rigorous steps to achieve this level of certification included implementing Green Restaurant Association’s seven environmental categories to reduce or change how each category would be used for better efficiency and sustainability: energy, water, reusables and disposables, chemicals and pollution, food and building and furnishing. Each restaurant had to follow and exceed standards to be awarded the 100% Certified Green Restaurant status.
This certification at SAN now offers travelers an opportunity to improve their environmental footprint while dining at the airport.
