San Diego International Airport is North America’s busiest one-runway commercial airport, serving 16.4 million passengers and transporting 152,257 tons of cargo in 2004.

In the first eight months of 2004, the airport experienced a 7.3 percent increase in passenger traffic, compared to the same period in 2003. In August 2004, the airport saw its all-time highest monthly passenger traffic, serving 1,595,951 travelers. Once the airport reaches annual passenger traffic of 23 million, airport facilities will begin to constrain the rate of passenger accommodation and growth.
